Tai chi helps Fibromyalgia- England Journal of Medicine

New study published in The New England Journal of Medicine shows Tai chi helps in Fibromyalgia- a disease characterized by chronic widespread pain throughout the body - in the muscle and connective tissue.

The New York Times writes:

The ancient Chinese practice of tai chi may be effective as a therapy for fibromyalgia, according to a study published on Thursday in The New England Journal of Medicine.

A clinical trial at Tufts Medical Center found that after 12 weeks of tai chi, patients with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition, did significantly better in measurements of pain, fatigue, physical functioning, sleeplessness and depression than a comparable group given stretching exercises and wellness education. Tai chi patients were also more likely to sustain improvement three months later.

“It’s an impressive finding,” said Dr. Daniel Solomon, chief of clinical research in rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, who was not involved in the research. “This was a well-done study. It was kind of amazing that the effects seem to carry over.” More>>

Messages from water

'Be Like Water my friend'.

Water is a model and an inspiration for Tai chi chuan - its softness, formlessness, its lowness. But also its power as it conquers hardness (rock included).

Water also flows around, and have curves.

But in addition to what we know about water, there is fascinating results from the experiments from Dr. Masaru Emoto with water.

Basically water respond to words, intentions and even music. In the image above, "Love and Gratitude" is pasted to the container holding the water.

This is a further insights gained about the wisdom of using helpful words towards yourself (and others). As we have taught for the past 2 decades (since 1980's)- words can help you or hurt you; so choose words that help.

Sports and fitness : Fifa world cup is round the corner

Sports and sporting life is a key corner stone to wellness and health.

Once in four years, the World Cup of football comes into the world's stage. Fans and importantly "non- fans" also get swept in and watch the action and excitement of the competition.

Just completed the Tai chi push hands (Taiji tui shou) Level 1 workshop in our Ampang centre on the 27th March 2010.

Sharing Tai chi insights on Health and Wellness at Health and Happiness Festival 2010

I'll be speaking at the Health and Happiness Festival 2010 at the JW Marriott in KL.

Now is a good time to reflect on the evolution and progress of the understanding of Tai chi, and its benefit to the society.

The Festival will draw the general public, especially those who have an interest in health and wellness and happiness.  They would include people interested in the mind-body connection.  Other healers will also visit and speak or have a booth at the festival.

In my 30+ years of teaching Tai chi chuan, I see the following as important contributions of the art to present day society:

• Quieting the mind
• Raising the awareness and consciousness of the body
  
• Ridding the body/mind of stiffness, awkwardness and tension
  
• Harnessing the healing power of chi (qi)
• Helping with striking a Balance - between 'achieving', striving, and goal-orientation & relaxing, allowing and flowing.
• Overcoming hardness with softness
• Coordination between the breath, body sensation and movements
• Meditation without ever having to sit in a cross legged position

The Festival is scheduled for 20th and 21st March 2010.  This is the second year that the Health and Happiness Festival is held in Malaysia.

SE Pendant recalled

The SE Pendant sold by eCosway was found cautioned to have enhanced radioactivity.  This was reported in Hong Kong by the  Customs and Excise Department last month in September 2009.

Samples of the seized pendants were sent to the Department of Health and the Government Laboratory for analysis and testing. Analysis results revealed that the radioactivity concentrations of radioactive thorium-232 and uranium-238 in the pendant were both above the limit recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)for commodity products.

According to the Department of Health, short term contact with the pendant would not result in immediate effect to health. As the radiation dose from a single pendant may reach 50% - 60% of the annual skin dose limit recommended by the International Commission on Radiological Protection, year-long contact with the pendant may result in erythema of the skin in some individuals. The risk of skin cancer also increases with the duration of contact.

12 week Tai Chi course in Ampang

Tai chi Self defense class interviewed in thestar.com.my

The ladies in our Basic Self defense course were featured today in a video by thestar.com.my, the internet version of The Star newspaper. This was held in Kuala Lumpur. Besides Tai chi, akido was also featured.

In the Tai chi classes, we were training more on mobility, stepping, sensing and some push hands.

Interview and Video filming with The Star online

The Star online shot a video of our class and interviewed our Tai chi Ladies Self Defense class.  This was held at the Yoga Life Center in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur today, Sunday.

We featured Tai chi chuan form, our stepping, ta lu, push hands and applications.

We are scheduled to appear online on thestar.com.my sometime in the middle of next week.  We'll post it when it appears online.

4Life Immune Spray - New and revised

In the 4Life "Illuminate 09"- 4Life Research International convention, the company announced the new TF Immune spray.  We have used it when we bought the older version from Australia/New Zealand before.  But now its re-formulated and improved.

This product is important as an additional thing we can take along - especially when we travel.  Customers use it quickly as as they feel a sore throat coming on, etc.  Immune spray has been launched in the USA and will be launched in Malaysia/Singapore and the region later this year.

Comments on Time Magazine Revolution In Stem Cells Article

Time magazine recently featured an article on Stem Cells in the Feb 9th 2009 issue.

Below is a comment by Christian Drapeau, from his blog. Mr. Drapeau has been the Director of Research and Development at Cell Tech International and then Desert Lake Technologies, before co-founding STEMTech HealthSciences and becoming its Chief Science Officer.

"The key point of the Time magazine article How the Coming Revolution in Stem Cells Could Save Your Life is the description of a recently developed new way of creating stem cells, by manipulating a few genes of an otherwise normal tissue cell.

In brief, each cell of the body contains the very same DNA that was present when every one of us was just an embryo made of embryonic stem cells. Therefore, the “embryonicness” that is so characteristic of embryonic stem cells, that is their ability to proliferate and become cells of virtually all tissues, is still present in each cell of our body.

However, since this “embryonicness” is no longer needed after birth, that part of the genome is suppressed. A few years ago, Shinya Yamanaka, a Japanese scientist, identified four genes that essentially encode for this “embryonicness”. Therefore it is possible to transform a normal cell of the body into an embryonic-like cell by activating these genes. So in theory it is possible to work with embryonic-like stem cells without having to damage human embryos.

The problem with this is that this is exactly what a cancer cell is, a rogue cell that has hijacked the “embryonicness” present in the DNA. The main problem with embryonic stem cells is the high risk of forming tumor cells. The genes responsible for their “embryonicness” are suppressed after birth to prevent the formation of abnormal tissue –essentially cancer- that would soon or later mean death. So nature in its wisdom has specifically developed a way to suppress these genes to prevent disease formation after birth.

When these genes are added or activated, against nature’s decree, I think we are playing with very dangerous fire. We are essentially awakening chaos in a cell, we have no idea what this could bring.

This brings us back to the discussion about the great potential of adult stem cells. To some extent it is true that adult stem cells are limited to becoming cells of the tissue in which they find themselves, but this is precisely why they carry such great promise. Unlike embryonic stem cells that can become all cells types and therefore create tumors, adult stem cells will only become cells of the tissue in which they find themselves.

It is not that they are intrinsically limited, as they do have the ability to become cells of virtually any tissue, but after migrating in a tissue they do become limited to the tissue in which they find themselves. So with adult stem cells we have the regenerative potential of making new tissue without the risk of tumor formation.

There is no doubt in my mind that the future of stem cell is with adult stem cells."
